Music & lyrics: Lorenzo Testa
Tunes: Jam the Miller (traditional)
Erich Fromm, in his 1976 book titled “To Have or to Be?” questioned about the two modes of existence that are inherent to our nature. As the author himself, I think the answer can be only one. I don’t remember where I was when I listened for the first time the waltz “Jem the Miller”, but it’s one of those tunes that sticks in your head and I remember well that I played it by ear on my mandolin as soon as I got back home.
Hey you, out there
Can you hear me?
Can you hear me?
Face the eternal quest
The greed, the envy, the hate
stole the smile from our face
Endless arguing ‘bout nothing
Missing the essence of life
The faces are withered
the feelings are gone
What’s left to us of our youth?
A name on a sheet
A brown faded pic
A question to answer:
Have we been?
Face the eternal quest
To have or to be
Have no fear
And be
Close the door at your back
Leaving the key in the hole
Try to look around
you’ll find out the meaning of life
Sail to the end of the sea
Try the climb to the peak
The curiosity is what drives us
along the way to be
a man
Face the eternal quest
To have or to be
Have no fear
And be
